Question : 1.      I am 45 years old male. I have a high cholesterol problem in my family (father’s side). My father had a heart attack at 38 years of age due to excessive smoking. However, he stopped smoking immediately. At 56 years of age, he underwent bypass surgery due to blockage of heart.

2.     Due to this reason, I started taking Lipid Profile Tests at 38 years of age (year 2008). The cholesterol level was 230-245, , Triglyceride 200-230, LDL 135-170 and VLDL 30-45. I am a non-vegetarian but a non-drinker and a non-smoker. I tried to control my food habit for 2 years but took fish almost daily, chicken twice a week and mutton once a month, without taking any medicine. However, the cholesterol levels did not come under control. In Aug 2010, I consulted a cardiologist who gave me 1 dose of fenofibrate (200mg) daily.

3.     I took 200 mg of fenofibrate daily for 6 years. During this period, I undertook cholesterol tests every six months and cholesterol was under control. In Aug 2015, I suffered from viral fever and stopped taking fenofibrate (200mg) till date. However, I kept on taking Lipid Profile tests every month. The cholesterol level was 249-255, Triglyceride 260-290, LDL 150-160 and VLDL 52-58 for last five months. I am still not taking any medicine since Aug 2015.

4.     My latest test results done on 20 XXXXXXX 16 and my ECG report (attached) are as follows :
Blood Pressure
128/78

Blood Sugar
Fasting : 96 mg/dl
PP : 118 mg/dl

LFT
Total Bilurubin : 0.55 mg/dl
SGOT : 38 mg/dl
SGPT : 40 mg/dl

Blood/Serum
Urea : 16 mg/dl
Creatinine : 1.1 mg/dl
Uric Acid : 6.8 mg/dl

Lipid Profile
Total Cholesterol : 250 mg/dl
Triglycerides : 260 mg/dl
HDL Cholesterol : 42 mg/dl
LDL Cholesterol : 156 mg/dl
VLDL Cholesterol : 52 mg/dl

5.     Please advise what medication I should take.

Never stop medicine unless advised by doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic.

See your Total Cholesterol , Triglycerides , LDL and VLDL all are high. Also you have a history of Heart problem in your father . So it is very important for you to take medicine even if the Cholesterol levels are normal. And never stop taking Cholesterol medicine due to any reason unless advised by a doctor.

I would recommend you to start taking Rosuvastatin+Fenofibrate ( 10mg + 160mg ) every night till further advise. Kindly get a prescription for this medicine and start using it .

In addition cut down on your non veg food intake . Totally avoid Mutton/Beef. Reduce Chicken intake to once in 10 days. Also avoid Sweets , Carbonated drinks, Cheese , butter , eat more of vegetables and fruits.

Repeat Lipid Profile after 6 months and revert back .

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Regards.
