Question: I am 77. Recent MRI showed diffuse age related atrophy in cerebral cortex. Moderate cerebellar atrophy. Moderately prominent ventricular system which at least in part is related to the cerebral atrophy.
I have had no brain injury. Presently suffer from vertigo and tinnitus. Being medicated for depression.
I understand it is Incurable but can it's progression be slowed or interrupted.
I take high dose liposomal encapsulated vitamin C and glutathione, also vitamins D, E & fish oil.
What other therapy would help.
Is it life threatening and could it affect quality of life?
Thank you for answers.
XXXX
Brief Answer:
MRI findings are not serious.
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thank you for posting your query.
I have gone through your symptoms as well as MRI brain findings.
First of all, I would like to reassure you that these MRI findings are not serious and they are not life threatening.
Normally also, as the age increases, atrophy (or shrinkage) of brain occurs and it is a natural phenomena in everyone.
Only if it produces symptoms, such as memory loss in cerebral atrophy or imbalance of arms/legs in cerebellar atrophy, it is considered abnormal.
In addition to what you are already doing, regular brain exercises (such as solving crossword puzzles, sudoku, learning a new skill or hobby, etc) would help in slowing down this atrophy.
I hope my reply has helped you.
I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.
Best wishes,
