Question: Results from my MRI reading:

0.5 x 0.5 x 1.0 cm left paracentral disc sequestration at L5-S1. There is mass effect on the anterior aspect of the thecal sac on the left side with mild canal stenosis. There is mass effect on the left S1 nerve root, which is displaced by approximately 3 mm. Annular bulging and posterior spondylotic ridging at L4-5 with borderline minimal canal stenosis. There is mild bilateral foraminal narrowing at L4-5. Questionable minimal annular bulging at L3-4. Desiccation of the L4-5 and L5-S1 discs. Levoscoliosis of the lumbar spine.

Brief Answer:
Surgery may be needed if medicines provide no relief.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
You have degenerative changes of the lumbar spine with canal stenosis at L4-L5 and S1. The mass effect on the spine is worrisome. This needs a regular monitoring after 6 weeks to see any progression of the mass.
The treatment is needed according to the severity of the symptoms. In case the pain is persistent after the medicines then surgical treatment may be considered. Do consult a neurosurgeon regarding the same.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

Please forgive my ignorance. What is the mass on the spine and why would this
be worrisome?

Thank you, kindly!

Brief Answer:
The mass is due to protruded disc.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The protrusion of the disc is causing the mass effect on the nerve root. If it progresses then it can cause further nerve root compression increasing your symptoms. This needs to be monitored for any increase in size after 6 weeks. In case it is constantly increasing then surgical treatment needs to be considered.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Discectomy can help.

Detailed Answer:
The type of surgery depends on the extent of disc protrusion. usually Discectomy is sufficient for minor disc protrusion. Do consult a neurosurgeon with all the MRI scan films for proper evaluation.
Regards.
