Question: My daughter is 5 months old and she is having a swelling in her right cheek from last 2 months. We have consulted to the pediatric and she suggested us ultrasound of cheek. We have done the same and found the muscles thickness. After that doctor told us to go for MRI and we have done the same. In that doctor has found the caffey diease. After that we have done the ESR and Alkaline Phosphate test and found increase in both. Please suggest the next step.

Brief Answer:
Symptomatic treatment is given.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The MRI findings and other investigations do point towards Caffey's syndrome. The main treatment is symptomatic to decrease the pain if any. Immunoglobulins and systemic steroids also help in decreasing the inflammatory symptoms.
There is no proven treatment to decrease the further progression of the problem as it is a genetically transmitted problem. Consulting a genetecist will help.
I hope this answers your query.

Hello doctor,
I am also more worried about the increased ESR and Alkaline Phosphate level. In future, it will harm my baby's bones or any other disease like arthritis etc.

Brief Answer:
It can cause bone damage.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Increased ESR indicates the active disease and inflammatory process in the body. Increased alkaline phosphatase is suggestive of a bone problem. This can cause bone damage later on.
Hope my answer is helpful.

What kind of precautions I have to take and my daughter's alkaline phosphatase is 461, it is too high or normal? Please suggest.

Answered by Dr. Dr. Praveen Tayal (42 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
The levels are high.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
The normal range is 44 to 147 IU/L. Raised levels of alkaline phosphatase are suggestive of rapid bone growth or bone related pathology or inflammation. Since it is a genetically related condition there is no specific treatment available. Just take care to avoid any kind of bone injury. Avoid all painful movements of the baby. Any dietary modifications or precautions cannot bring the levels to normal.
Regards.
