What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 9 Feb 2016
Question: My wife was diagnosed with brain cancer, GBM, was operated on and had 15 radiation treatments.
It has not been successful according the MRI done 2 weeks after treatment was done, so we can only assume the tumour is still growing.
What is the next area that would be affected by this tumour, and what should we look for to indicate the tumour indeed has spread? XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I am sorry that the therapy has not been successful.

Regarding on where does it spread, it does not spread in a distant site, it doesn't metastasize if that is what you mean. It continues to grow in the initial area.
There are rare forms which can migrate to other areas of the brain but they are less common subtypes, typically it is the initial cancerous cells not eliminated by the therapy which continue to multiplicate, the tumor grow in size and as a result compress and destroy the brain tissue.

As for signs to look for in growing and worsening it would depend on the lobe initially involved, but generally speaking most common manifestations would be headache, nausea and vomiting, confusion, weakness of the limbs on one side (actually it would be a progression of the initial symptoms) seizures and eventually altered consciousness.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
