Posted on Tue, 24 Jan 2017
Question: Hi,
I have been having pins and needle feeling over my body. I had a MRI on the c spine and a emg of the hands which showd nothing. I had a blood test that showed normal. I had a vitimin test which showed normal vit b12, but low vit D. The level was 13.3 for the vit D was suppose to be between 32-100.

Can this low level of vit D cause pins and needle in the hands and legs all day long? Doctor told me to a 2,000 of vit d. Is that enough to get the levels back to normal?

Brief Answer:
About VitD defficency;

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone carefully through your concern.

Vitamin D defficiency may be the cause of the symptoms you reported only if associated with low calcium levels, confirmed by laboratory.

I would recommend to take 20 000 UI/ week of vitamin D and calcium supplements if the calcium level is low.
If the calcium level is normal than another cause should be tried to find.

Hope the information will help.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta

If the vit d is not causing this what else do you think it can be?

Brief Answer:
Hypothyroidism should be excluded too.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,

Did you check other electrolytes (potassium, Mg, phosphate etc) ?
If done already, please attach the results here at the reports section.

There are many pathologies manifested with pins and needles (hypothyroidism, multiple sclerosis, some medications, anxiety etc).

The endocrinological pathologies are; electrolyte disturbances or hypothyroidism.

Dr.Mirjeta
