What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

Question: Hi I had an MRI of my cervical spine due to pain. This is the result of my . MRI "Subjectively, there is relatively low T1 and low T2 singal in bone marrow throughout the visualized spine and calvaria. Potentially intrahepatic. It raises concern for a marrow infilrative process such as Myeloma Fibrosis. And an Empty Sella is noted incidentally." What does all this mean?

Brief Answer:
Further evaluation may be better.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted the MRI details. In most cases, these findings could be normal, however, some basic further evaluation may be useful.

1. "Marrow infiltrative process"- This means that there is doubt of certain hematologic disorders. Blood tests such as serum protein electrophoresis, urine Bence XXXXXXX protein and bone marrow examination (needed in some cases) would exclude a condition such as multiple myeloma.

2. "Empty sella"- Sella is the area of brain, where the pituitary gland is located. Empty sella can be normally seen in some people, however, it could also mean less production of hormones from pituitary gland. So, blood tests for pituitary related hormones (cortisol, prolactin, growth hormone, thyroid hormone, etc) should be assessed in blood tests

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.
