Question: Hello doctor,

My mother is 56 years old and she was having occassional vertigo few days back, so the neurologist advised her brain mri.
The mri impression says:

IMPRESSION : Subcortical and periventricular FLAIR hyperintense foci noted suggestive of ischaemic changes.

Please advise what does this indicates?

Brief Answer:
Suggestive of minor lack of blood flow to brain

Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your mother's symptoms and MRI brain report.

The report shows minor reduction of blood flow (ischemia) to a few parts of brain. These are mild abnormalities and there is no need to worry.

The common causes for these changes are high BP and migraine.

Please get her BP, sugar and cholesterol checked up. If they are high, they would need to be controlled.

Aspirin tablets may be started to prevent further ischemia in future.

Her vertigo is most likely not related to these MRI abnormalities.

Best wishes,
