What Does My MRI Test Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: I was diagnosed through an MRI with "Left adnexal mass." Where is the left adnexal? I was told the mass is near my kidneys and adrenals. It is 4cm. However when I look it up, it always points to the uterus, however the doctor's office described it as I have above. I am having a pelvic sonogram. Will that also show the kidneys and adnexal or just the pelvis? Mixed messages are confusing. Thanks. XXXXXXX Schepps

Brief Answer:
The left adbexa refers to your left Fallopian tube and ovary

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

The left adnexa is the radiologic term for your tube and ovary (it is not possible to tell exactly whether the mass is coming from the tube or ovary). The tube and ovary can be in your pelvis or above it if another organ is pushing it upwards.

An MRI is not the best test to image the ovaries because it only looks in two dimensions. The pelvic ultrasound is a more accurate test to tell exactly what the mass is and where it is coming from.
Your kidneys are higher up and should have been seen on the MRI scan.

A "mass" just is a general term for a lump seen on an imaging exam. It does not specifically refer to cancer, and a simple ovarian cyst (very common in women) will be referred to this way on an MRI.

So there is really nothing to worry about until you have your pelvic ultrasound and your doctor goes over the results with you.

I hope i was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information clarifies things for you. If I can be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
