Question : I have a fracture of the third metatarsal. From Aug 25-Sept 29 I was in a boot. When the doctor did the X-ray I had a callus on the right side of the toe but no healing on the right. Doctor said give it another month--told me I could stop wearing the boot but no running, jumping, stairs, and to switch shoes. I did all those things. My job does involve lots of walking so that continued. I am scheduled to go back Oct 31 for another appt and Xray. But this weekend I have pain again and a bulging blue vein on the top of my foot. I put the boot back on. Can I wait until Tuesday to go back in or is this something more serious?

No need to use boot cast at present.

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic Surgeon.
In my opinion and my normal clinical practice 3 weeks of cast immobilization is enough for fracture healing. If there is no pain or transmitted movements at fracture site, I normally discontinue cast and start normal weight bearing. Healing in x rays may not be apparent for 2-3 months.
So in your case , I would examine clinically but there should be no requirement of any longer boot cast. You can continue without cast and go for consultation on 31st as planned.
