Question: Hi Dr,

I have been suffering from GERD from 2009 XXXXXXX I started taking medication from 2009 December.

I went to dr again in 2014 dec and anEGD was done, where dr took biopsies of my stomach tissue.

Please advise what is my condition and what to be expected in future.

Please go through my reports as well, Though report is not that clear but it will surely help you in assessing my conditiuon

Brief Answer:
Fundoplication surgery and SSRIs treatment can cure you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

I can see that you have been already advised to have a laparoscopic surgery (fundoplication). In my opinion, this is the best option for you.
You suffer from chronic acid reflux disease which has caused chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa. And there medicines therapy is not successful.

Moreover, you suffer from anxiety and depression. This makes acid reflux impossible to control as anxiety stimulates stomach acid production.

You should definitely go through the laparoscopy. You have all necessary tests already done. And you should also start SSRI (anti anxiety medicines) treatment. Please consult psychiatrist in this matter. Both laparoscopy and SSRIs treatment can set you free from all mentioned symptoms.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Hi Doctor,

THanks for the reply, I will go for the surgery at the end of this year. I ma currently in US, whjereby going to a Psychiatrist and getting an ssri is difficult as of now. I have to get the surgery but more than surgery I need care after surgery which is not possible as I am all alone in US. Hence I have planned that I will work to the end of teh year whereby Ill have money with me and would be free from all the finnancial stress. I will get the surgery and stay with my mom which will enable me in getting teh care I deserve.

For now I want to know from a gastro doctor as to what th emild inflammation in my stomach means as this is causing all the anxiety. Since its already an year that I have had endoscopy and by the tikme ill get the surgery it will be 2 years after the endoscopyt that ill go for the surgery i.e. by dec 2016. I want to know what are the health concerns i am looking at in the future, because of teh inflammation in my stomach.

Th ebig question
Will I get cancer even after having fundoplication surgery?
If the inflammation has increased in teh stomach in the last year, can it be healed medically or with any alternate medicines?
What are the possibilities of getting cancer from the inflammation and how long will it take to get cancer from this disease?

Brief Answer:
Please do not think about the cancer at this point.

Detailed Answer:
Your inflammation is not something you should be scared of. Its (as the report says) mild. It means that the superficial part of the stomach (mucosa) is constantly irritated what has caused activation of immune system (as a protection mechanism). As long as there is no intestinal metaplasia, the inflammatory changes are reversible and the risk of stomach cancer is very low.
The inflammation still can be healed with medicines.
You should not think about the cancer at this point. First of all you are way too young for the cancer. Secondly, it does not develop suddenly. Usually it takes many years.
So even if the surgery will be in next year, the chance of getting cancer is minimal.
