Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that a single high blood pressure value is not indicative of High blood pressure.

It may be related to physical or emotional stress, caffeine intake, etc..

I would recommend you to closely monitor your blood pressure frequently during the day ( in sitting position after 10 minutes of total relax) for the next 5-7 days and refer them to your doctor.

If your blood pressure values are above 135/85 mm Hg most of the time, they may be indicative of uncontrolled high blood pressure.

In such case you should perform further tests to exclude other possible causes of secondary blood pressure:

- chest X ray study
- resting ECG
- lab blood tests ( complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate, thyroid hormone levels , fasting glucose, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes)

Otherwise, if your blood pressure values are normal most of the time, there is nothing to worry about.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

As I explained you before, it is important to closely monitor your blood pressure for some days, before concluding that you suffer from uncontrolled high blood pressure and that antihypertensive therapy is needed.

Anyway, if the diagnosis of high blood pressure is confirmed I would recommend starting with one of these class of antihypertensive drugs:

- ACE inhibiotor like enalapril, ramipril, etc.
- ARB drug like valsartan, losartan, etc.
- calcium channel blocker like amlodipine, lercanidipine.

You should know that there is not specified therapy to start in such cases. The treatment choices are made based on individual characteristics and tolerance (related to their possible adverse effects).

I would also recommend some lifestyle modifications, which can help you manage better you blood pressure:

- a healthy diet (reduce salt and caffeine intake)
- a lot of physical activity (walking, aerobics, recreational sports, etc.)
- lose weight if you are overweight.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
