What Does My Blood Test Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 1 Sep 2014
Question: I just got lab results back and glucose was out of range at 113H, AST out of range at 46 H and ALT out of range at 49 H. Everything else in range this was a comprehensive non fasting metabolic panel. Is there any reason for concern with these values. Can not see my doc until next week and concerned. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
mild increase in liver enzymes

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Blood sugars can diagnose a person as normal, prediabetic (at risk of becoming a diabetic but not there yet), diabetic.

Blood sugars should be done as either fasting or 2 hours after meal to determine if they are normal or not.

Fasting:normal-less than 100, prediabetic 100 to 126 and diabetic- greater than 126

2 hour after meals: normal-less than 140, prediabetic 140 to 200, diabetic greater than 200

If your reading of 113 is a fasting blood sugar, it means that you are a prediabetic. This means you are at risk of becoming a diabetic at some point. Lifestyle changes such as a change in diet and activity would put it off.

If your blood sugar is 2 hour post meal, then it is normal.

In terms of the liver function tests (AST and ALt) - one of the most common reason for increase is non alcoholic fatty liver disease which can ,if not treated, go on to liver failure.
This is the build up of fat in the liver that is not due to alcohol but due to lifestyle (diet, activity).
It is more common if there is a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, decreased activity, high carb diet, increased weight

Non alcoholic fatty liver is treated by increase in physical activity and also change in diet. In some cases medication such as cholesterol meds are needed.
These changes prevent progression to liver failure.

So far, your increases are slight and there is not likely to be any significant changes or damage to the liver. At present it is still working as normal. Needs to be monitored.

Summary:(1) if blood sugar is fasting then it is in prediabetic range, if it is a 2 hour , then it is normal
(2)the increase in liver function test is only mild but may indicate non alcoholic fatty liver disease.Likely still normal liver function. Will improve with lifestyle changes

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
