Question : I had blood tests for physical. High cholesterol and the normals. New thing to come out is that my CBC levels are wacky. I know nothing about it.
Myelocytes Absolute=.08
Basophils Absolute=.23
Giant PLTs=Occasional.

My doctor had me do another CBC differential today. He said it could be a mix up or incorrect test.

I have had testicular cancer 3 times. I had 20 rounds of radiation in 2006.

Do you believe there is anything to this abnormal result or is it nothing to worry about?

Brief Answer:
Await new results

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You had a recent physical and lab test that show some abnormal results in the CBC. The absolute myelocyte and basophil counts were slightly off and your platelets appeared larger than normal. These blood counts are all done with machines and like all machines can make errors in reading. If your blood was collected incorrectly, or if the tubes where not handled correctly or the machine not calibrated correctly ect. There are numerous variables that will make the CBC count off. I agree with having a repeat done and you are currently waiting for that result.

I would suspect your abnormal results are just machine error. If the results still show some abnormalities then you need to look into the context of the results. You are feeling well and have no other medical issues currently bothering you then that it your best indicator for good health. The other thing is these normal values are what are normal for 2/3 of the population. That means that 1/3 of the abnormal values are still normal. The labs uses 2 standard deviations as the cut off for normal and that means some people will still be normal but have values in the "abnormal" range. It means they are still healthy and nothing is wrong or needs to be done. Be careful on how one interprets labs as abnormal does not always mean abnormal.

In summary
1. await repeat lab tests
2. You feel healthy therefore more than likely you are healthy
3. labs show normal as 2 standard deviations above normal which means a portion of abnormal are really normal

I hope I answered your question. Please contact HCM again with your health care concerns or questions
