What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Sep 2015
Question: I recently had a blood test done that showed my liver enzymes were high. AST was 73 and ALT was 86. I'm 27 years old, never drank alcohol, am 5'7, 100 pounds. Don't have any hearth issues. I don't eat every healthy, and don't drink more than a glass of water a day. All of the other Liver Panel tests were normal, ultrasound was normal, no hepitits of any kind. What could be the problem? I went back a week later after drinking more water and eating healthy and my enzyme levels were down and started to eat fried oily foods and levels went up.

Brief Answer:
Please, eating healthy is very helpful for health!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this test and all the disturbing thoughts this must have caused you. From the information provided, your diet seems to be the problem here. If it were a liver disease, there is no way these enzymes would fluctuate with the type of food you eat. You need to eat not just to have nervy but also to stay healthy. Fried food puts enormous burden on the liver because of huge resources to metabolize them and that could be the possible reason. Fried foods are really not healthy and I will not advise you to continue doing so. With every other test possible, this makes the diet being a possible cause more likely.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Yes My ALT levels went from 76-89-52-73. all with in 3 week time frame and my AST from 73-40-53. So the week that I started to eat healthy and drink plenty of water the ALT was 52 and AST 40. The over the weekend had fries and fried foods and took the test the day after eating unhealthy the levels went up to 73 and ast 53. Are my levels considered really high? My doctor hasn't diagnosed me with anything yet they said they will just monitor with more test results. Could I have a fatty liver even if it didn't show up on the ultrasound yet? If the levels don't go back to normal range could I have a liver failure and how soon?

Brief Answer:
No liver failure here!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Liver failure is not even an issue at this time. Please, do not poison your mind thinking it is this easy to get to liver failure. Your levels are on the upper side of normal. Though not too high, they are not normal and I will like that you control your diet. Eat healthy, exercise often, stay away from alcohol and tobacco as well.

With monitoring, we will be able to tell if there is anything more we should be doing. Your weight and height make fatly liver less likely and supported by normal findings on ultrasound, this is very unlikely.

I wish you well and hope you find this information helpful.

so what happens if my liver enzymes stay elevated? Doesn't it eventually cause scarring of the liver? Is there medication to lower liver enzymes? should I be eating anything to help lower the enzymes apart from not eating oily, fatty foods? Thank you so much.

Brief Answer:
The cause dis the problem and not the elevated numbers!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this follow up precision.

The numbers reflect what is not right and not the problem itself. I will suggest that you do al to address the increased numbers which seems to be very much related to your diet. I will encourage you to address your diet at this time. Unless these numbers persist, there is no need for further worries.

Scarring is a whole different ball game. It is a chronic process and happens over several years and not overnight. We are not letting that happen by acting immediately on what matter right now.

Let me know what your take is and if there is something more you will like us to talk about.
