Question : I went to the hospital a week ago for diarrhea and dizziness. I have IBS so that could have been the cause or just a regular stomach virus. While at the hospital, I asked for the results of my blood work. The nurse said everything was in normal range. I received the medical records today and I notice that I did have abnormal ranges that were not mentioned to me.

Neut - 90.9
Lymph - 4.6
Mono 3.9
Additional Information that could be helpful: When the blood was taken I was under stress, had not eaten and was possibly dehydrated.
Do you know what could cause those readings. I am worried about leukemia or lymphoma.

Hello and welcome,

In looking at those numbers, I am assuming that these are given as percentages rather than absolute numbers? So it's Neutrophils 90.9%?

Elevated neutrophils can happen whenever there is infection (more often with a bacterial infection) or inflammation.

Decreased lymphocytes and monocytes can happen from infection too. With a viral infection, sometimes we see elevated lymphocyte percentage of the total and with bacterial infections, the lymphocytes can go down. But that isn't a hard and fast rule.

You can go to your doctor in 2-4 weeks and have the CBC repeated, to make sure your white count has returned to normal. When they draw the CBC, make sure the doctor orders a "differential" as well. I wouldn't worry about the results above at all, but it would be quite reasonable to get it rechecked.
