What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

Question : Hello Doc,
I recently went for a blood test and found some areas that need attention. Below are the tests that did not have normal results:

A) Liver Function Test (LFT):-
1) Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT) 92.0 U/L
2) Globulin 2.1 gm/dl
3) Albumin/Globulin Ratio (A/G) 2.24 g/dL

B) Lipid Profile:-
1) Triglycerides 352.5 mg/dl
2) Non HDL Cholesterol 168.7 mg/dl
3) VLDL -Very Low Density Lipoprotein 70.5 mg/dl
4) Cholesterol/HDL Ratio 6.5

Lipids have been similar in the past too. However, LFT results are new.
I would like to understand if this is alarming. And what could be some of the best way to counter this. Please advise.

Hello,
Welcome to HCM,
I have read your query,

Here your GGT (92) and globulin values including A/G ratio will be considered as a clinically normal despite they are marginally elevated (depending upon the lab variations) and it would have no clinical significance in an otherwise healthy individual.

I would not be personally worried about it.

Your total serum cholesterol/HDL ratio,VLDL cholesterol (70) and serum triglycerides (352) are elevated which all need some medical attention.

However,the ratio of TC/HDL (total cholestrol/HDL) is more important that merely cholesterol value. And here it is 6.5 (below 5.0 is considered as a normal).You didn't mention your cholesterol and HDL values separatly.

Although these lipids are high,they are NOT risky or alarming but it is always better to be concerned than being ignorant.

Low dose statins (like atorvastatin and fenofibrate combination) can also be started as your past lipig profile was also similar.You can see your family physician and discuss with him about the drug.

The probable reason for high cholesterol could be lack of enough muscular exercise or hereditary.

So,I would suggest you to continue regular exercises at gym or at home as per your convenience for about 30 to 45 minutes to get maximum response. Playing badminton is also fine.

In general to reduce your Cholesterol (Total cholesterol,triglycerides and VLDL) follow these dietary guidelines along with regular exercises.

1) Avoid direct sugars and avoid fried snacks, bakery items.Eating home food is good.

2) Take plenty of vegetable salads- at least 1 bowlful cut raw vegetables like cucumber, tomato, carrot and vegetables which you can eat raw.

3) Snacks should contain healthy nuts like almonds or walnuts and a few dry fruits but no fruit juices,

4) Avoid soft drinks as they are only for taste having NO nutritional values.It is good that you have quit alcohol.

5) Skimmed milk and milk items made up of skimmed milk are good to check on cholesterol,

6) Egg white is fine but avoid egg yellow means yolk.

You can go for yearly check up of your lipid profile and there is no need to worry at present about it as they are not dangerous and can be controlled.
