Question : Recent blood work showed alt at 33, ast @20, cholesterol at 211, I am 72 years white female. All other blood tests were normal. Dr wants additional blood test and ultrasound before prescribing statin. Should I be worried?
Brief Answer:
No need to worry.
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for asking HCM
I have gone through your query. Your AST and ALT are within normal limits. Cholesterol is slightly high if it is total cholesterol. If you provide whole lipid profile test report then it will be more helpful.
Ultrasound examination will be helpful to know about the exact status of liver and rule out fatty liver. It is routine now by many doctors before starting statins. There is nothing to worry about this. If you didn't do a complete lipid profile that also should be carried out.
Let me know if anything not clear.
I am happy to help you.
Thanks.

As you requested HDL 56, VLDL 35,LDL 120. Chol/HDL Ratio 3.8
Brief Answer:
LDL and VLDL slightly raised.
Detailed Answer:
Welcome again.
Thank you for your follow up query.
Your LDL and VLDL are slightly raised. For this range statins are advised for those who are at risk of having heart disease. Ideally LDL should be kept below 100 and VLDL below 30. Low dose statins will help for this. Daily exercises like brisk walking and diet also helps.
