What Does My Blood Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 Sep 2017
Question: Hi, I am 21 year old female. In the recent blood test that I had in UK, the total white cell count is 11.5. Lymphocyte count is 4.1, Neutrophil is 5.8, Monocytes is 0.9, Eosinophil is 0.6 and Basophils is 0.1. Should I be concerned. Is the elevation in count alarming and worrisome. Anything serious with respect to leukemia.

Brief Answer:
No cause for alarm!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed your results and there is nothing so worrisome. The increase is just on the upper limit of normal and I will not investigate further at this time. Besides, no abnormal cells were identified. If leukemia was anywhere in the picture, you would have at least reported symptoms of fatigue, weight loss, recurrent fevers, etc.

I hope this helps and clarifies your worries. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if more details and clarifications are desired.

Thank you very much for a very quick response. In your reply you said, no abnormal cells were identified. How do you say this. The GP who communicated the report to me told me to have another test done while you say you will not investigate further at this time. What can be the reason for this difference in opinion.

Brief Answer:
I will not investigate further at this time!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I will not investigate further in regards of saying there is a disease condition that explains this at this time. When a next blood test is done in 3months, the trend will be more informative. It will be totally over the board to think a borderline increase observed for the first time can indicate a leukemia. This slightly above normal is not concerning unless there is a documented continued increase.

I will recommend a control blood test in 3months only at this time.

Let me know if you have any further worries.

Thanks. Can you let me know the normal numbers for Total WBC, Lymphocyte, Neutrophil, Monocytes,Eosinophil and Basophil for a 21 year old female. Is this normal number very different for different testing machines and procedures

Brief Answer:
Normal WBC is 4000-11,000!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The normal range is 4000-11,000 cells. You now see you were just off by a few cells and am sure subsequent tests would not shown this. I am of the opinion that this is more of a high normal than an abnormal test result.

I wish you well.
