What Does My Blood Test Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Apr 2016
Question: Good Evening, Dr. My recent blood test was normal in all respects except for slightly elevated Liver enzymes as follows: 48 AST and 75 ALT I typically have 2-3 glasses of wine each evening (Red) but before my test I had slightly more. Since receiving my test results I am making a concerted effort to reduce wine consumption. Do you think that these levels are of concern and could they be explained by alcohol consumption. Thank you for a reply in advance.

Brief Answer:
You need to have ultrasound abdomen and viral serolgies

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible. Based on the reports you have shared it can be due to variety of causes. The possibility of alcoholic hepatitis though exists in your case, but right approach would be to rule out viral hepatitis first by getting serolgies for hepatitis B and C. If these are normal then a major area of concern is ruled out already, Also get an ultrasound abdomen for liver size, structure and echogenecity and any nodularity. Another common cause which is quite possible in your case can be due to fatty liver. In any case, drinking more fluids and water and decreasing alcohol will be helpful regardless of the cause so kindly take care of your liver as it has started to give you warning signals. Wishing you a good health. If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.
