Question : I just got a liver enzyme report back: ALT 126, AST 49. I am a wine drinker, so I'm sure this is a contributing factor. My questions are this: 1. Are these seriously high numbers? 2. Do these numbers indicate permanent liver damage?

Brief Answer:
Not seriously high numbers...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and my answers are as following:

1. Your ALT and AST are considered higher than normal, however, their increase is not worrisome and not seriously high number.

2. Taking into account that you are a wine drinker, regular alcohol consumption can be possible contributing factor.

Transaminases only cannot determine the damages to the liver. There are other factors to be considered including:
- abdominal ultrasound to evaluate the liver and biliary structure
- upper endoscopy to rule out esophageal varices
- protein electrophoresis
- protrombin time
- hepatitis (B, and C) testing

Hope it answered to your queries!

Thank you so much! I have also been experiencing numbness in the hands and feet, particularly at night. Could this be a contributing symptom to the high enzyme numbers?

Brief Answer:
Not related to high transaminase numbers

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Numbness in hands and feet, particularly at night are not related to high enzyme numbers. Most possible causes include:
- arthritis
- anemia
- vitamin deficiency (of group B)
- magnesium or other minerals deficiency
- neuropathy
- compression of nerves during night especially if you are overweight
- work overload during the day

I advise to run further tests to exclude:
- anemia (complete blood count)
- vitamins and minerals deficiency (vitamins and electrolytes levels in blood)
- arthritis testing

Hope it helped!
