What Does My Liver Enzyme Test Result Indicate?

Posted on Fri, 30 Jan 2015
Question: I'm curious about the liver enzyme test results. I'm not a heavy drinker at all.... and the elevated GGT? It is curious because i haven't even had a single drink since christmas day and then a month before that. I'm overweight (230 pounds) 6 foot 2 inches. I don't eat well and get a bit of excercise from walking. i'm on prasocin 6 mg per day, macolobime 300 mg per day and lamotragine at 200mg per day. history of pancreatic cancer in the family... nothing liver related. i'm also on testosterone injections biweekly. I'm at a loss because the data looks like i'm a raging alcholic, which i'm not!

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver is the most probable reason of such elevated liver enzymes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Your liver enzymes are only slightly elevated. Please note that liver enzymes get released to the blood in case of liver cells destruction. Such destruction does not have to be caused by alcohol. There is many other factors which can affect liver in the same way alcohol does.
Most common reason of such elevated liver enzymes is fatty liver. As you are overweight and do not eat well, fatty liver is very probable at your case. Due to increased fat intake, it appears in the liver instead of regular liver cells. Luckily fatty liver is reversible condition and diet and lifestyle change can do that. However if nothing is done to reverse it, it may lead to liver cirrhosis.

I suggest you to have abdominal ultrasound which can reveal fatty liver. You should consult dietitian and modify your diet and lifestyle (if its possible).

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

What would cause the elevated GGT levels?

I abused street drugs and alcohol in my younger years (30s). Could this be responsible for such elevation? Did you look at the rest of my reports? Anything of concern?

Thanks for your help dr. Stanko.

Brief Answer:
Fatty liver is responsible for both AST and GGT elevation.

Detailed Answer:
Fatty liver is responsible for GGT and AST levels elevation. Both are liver cells enzymes, both get released to the blood when there is some liver cell destruction.
Liver has great ability to regenerate. It takes from 1 to 3 months. Any abuse of drugs and alcohol in younger years has completely no impact to current liver condition. Its a history.
Yes, I have looked at all your reports. Your cholesterol level is too high. This is all connected: bad diet, obesity, high cholesterol level, fatty liver, elevated liver enzymes. This can be treated as a one issue.
So once again, try to modify your diet and lifestyle.

Regards.

I would like to know that the records i've provided are confidential and that they will be deleted in some way (i just don't want them floating around anywhere. Again thank you and i look forward to this final question/answer.
