Question : I have a Gamma GT count of 187. I am a 44 year old woman, weight 52kg. Is this dangerously high, and how high can this count actually go up to ?
Brief Answer:
hi and welcome
Detailed Answer:
As I see, you have slightly elevated ast and moderately elevated ggt and this is still not worrying if you don't have any liver related symptoms. it can be just temporary elevated ggt which doesn't mean anything. But also It can be caused by several things and most common are alcohol and certain drugs. If you don't take alcohol and drugs then some less common causes should be considered such as viral hepatitis. I suggest to repeat liver tests in 3-4 weeks,if values persist you need to do liver ultrasound and viral markers and then plan further steps. Wish you good health. Regards

Dear Dr. Romic,
Thanks so much for your detailed response. I do drink excessive alcohol, say 7 units per night and I don't eat much. How high can the Gamma GT go to.
If I eat properly, would that help ?
If I tried to go down to say 4 a night, still not eating properly, would that help ?
How close are these results to Kosekoff Syndrome.

Brief Answer:
hi
Detailed Answer:
Korsakoff syndrome is seen in late stages of alcoholic disease and this is consequences of long and excessive alcohol abuse. In your case it is obvious that ggt levels is caused by alcohol and it should be reduced of course. As much as possible. Since other liver tests are fine there is probably still no some significant liver damage but you need to do ultrasound more to define it more detailed. But if you continue to drink excessively then there will be liver damage progression for sure. Ggt my rise to several hundred of even 1000 but more than 100 is significant value and it is indicator of too much alcohol in your life. There are hepatoprotective diets which you should follow and avoid hepatotoxic drugs. Wish you good health. Regards
