What Does My Ultrasound Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: Ultrasound dated December 19, 2014, states there is a 5 mm lesion with an irregular margin in the lest breast at 12 o clock posterior depth. The lesion is hypoechoic. The abnormality is more prominent. Low suspicious for malignancy, Previous ultrasound dated XXXXXXX 2014 states: The stable 4 mm complex cyst in the left breast at 12 o clock middle depth appears probably benign. Could this complex cyst be the same as the lesion mentioned. Is an irregular margin always cancer?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

This particular lesion is probably the same one that is referred to in the other ultrasound. It looks like it is relatively stable. However, I think it would be reasonable for you to visit with a breast specialist to see if a biopsy might be recommended.

With a small lesions like this frequent follow up is sometimes recommended. If you see a specialist he or she may recommend that you repeat mammogram and ultrasound in six months.

irregular borders as a descriptive term does not always indicate cancer.

Most likely you do not have any type of cancer. I think it is important however that you continue close follow up with your physicians.

Thanks again for sending your question.

Detailed Answer:
hello again,

cysts may have irregular borders. this can sometimes happen if the cyst is septated.

a biopsy is reasonable. hopefully this will set your mind at ease after the procedure is done and after the pathologist reviews the results.

as for cysts in the Breast - this is something that is difficult to prevent - it is part of your natural biology and there are no treatments that I know of that would help
prevent them.

sincerely,
