Question : Hello

I am a 29 year old healthy make. Recently I have been experiencing mild abdominal pain and bloating.

My doctor ordered blood work and urinalysis which included ALT, AST, ALP, Gamma GT, Bilirubin etc. All was normal. As was a physical exam.

He also ordered an abdominal ultrasound. The results were as follows;

1. Spleen, kidneys, aorta, common duct and gallbladder all normal.

2. Liver was slightly heterogenous but otherwise normal.

3. Could not obtain adequate pancreas view.

In regards to the liver and pancreas my family doctor said I am fine, do not worry. Would you concur?

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

After reviewing your history, laboratory and ultrasound data I would like to say that the pancreas was the only organ who wasn't properly evaluated (the doctor couldn't obtain an adequate view). However, you shouldn't worry for the moment and should do some dietary and life style changes.

This is why I strongly recommend to continue with healthy life style as follows:
- Eat healthy diet reach in fresh vegetables and fruits, low on animal fat.
- Eat often and in small portions
- Avoid spicy food
- Reduce alcohol intake to less than a glass of wine per day
- Quit smoking
- Avoid café, tea, chocolate, carbonated drink etc.
- Avoid unnecessary stress
- Use Gavicson (antacids)
- Use creon (pancreas enzymes)
- Avoid lying down at least 2-3 hours after eating

If the symptoms persist you should repeat the abdominal ultrasound after 1-2 months for a proper evaluation of pancreas.

Is the slightly heterogeneous liver anything to worry about? What can cause this?

I guess my main concern here is that the heterogenous area on my liver is a tumour or something of that effect...

Detailed Answer:
Hi back and sorry for my late.
Heterogeneous liver is mostly associated with fatty liver/mild fibrosis and not with cancer issues.

On abdominal ultrasound liver cancer is like a mass located and diferentated from other liver tissue, it is not spread all over the liver.
So don't worry, your abdominal ultrasound findjngs are not related with liver cancer.
Hope it was helpful to you!

Thanks Doctor

Does a heterogenous liver mean I have Fatty Liver Disease? All other liver tests were normal..

Also I forgot to mention I had both a amylase and lipase test for the pancreas, both were normal. Is pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis something to worry about at my age?

Brief Answer:
Your findings are not related with pancreatic cancer

Detailed Answer:
Hi back
Yes heterogeneous liver may be related with mild fatty liver, even your liver tests are normal.
with regards to pancreatic cancer it is unlikely at your age.
Moreover you do not have nothing at your test to suspect pancreatic cancer.
So don't worry and enjoy your life.

Regards
Dr.Klerida
