Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: I have a ultra sound report for full bladder.
I have some doubts about the conditions of ovaries as mentioned in that report.
as per the report, it says
the right ovary is globular and show tiny follicles, 8-10 in number. it measures 32*27*20 mm with volume of 9.4cc. the left ovary measures 31*21*13mm with a volume of 5cc.the appearances of the overies are not classical for pcod.necessary hormonal workout may be carried out for the same.
please clarify above report. is there any matter of concern. is everything normal.

I am attaching screenshot of report.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. The ultrasound report you have mentioned shows multiple follicles with increased volume, and is suggestive of a polycystic ovary.
Left ovary is normal.
PCOS is polycystic ovarian syndrome and is associated with irregular menstrual cycle and polycystic ovaries with enlarged volume ( more than12 cc) and multiple follicles. Your ultrasound report is not confirmatory of PCOS, but it should be further confirmed by hormone testing like FSH, LH.
I suggest you not to worry.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear, if your periods are regular and hormonal assays are normal, then there is no need to worry. You are not having PCOS then as it is associated with menstrual irregularities.
Infertility is said to occur when a couple fails to conceive after one year of successful unprotected intercourse. The chances of conception in each menstrual cycle is 20-25%. Stress and anxiety also decrease the chances of conception.
I suggest you not to worry. You should follow the fertile period, from day 10-24 day of the cycle, and have unprotected intercourse every alternate day to maximise the chance of conception.
Do take folic acid tablet 5 mg once a day daily preconceptionally to prevent the chances of risk of congenital anomalies in the fetus.
If you are very apprehensive, then you and your husband should get properly examined and investigated for the cause of infertility.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.

Dr Deepti Verma
