default
Posted on Thu, 9 Nov 2017
Question: Is it normal to experience soreness/aching on my sides and back after an upper endoscopy (had it done 24 hours ago)?

Its predominantly on my left side, especially when sneezing or coughing hard.

Brief Answer:
The pain is likely due to presence of gas

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic for your health

During endoscopic evaluation, gas will be pumped into the esophagus and stomach to increase the visibility.
The presence of this gas can trigger pain.
-Eat small frequent meals rather than large portion of food to help reduce the pain.
The pain should subside in next 72 hours.

However, you need to keep a close watch for worsening pain, persisting pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty, continuous cough or development of fever. These warning signs are suggestive of possible perforation. In such case, immediately follow up with the emergency room.

Will do. The pain hasnt gotten worse since yeaterday, but it hasnt gotten much better. I only noticed after already eating a large meal (after fasting for 12 hours) and took a nap, that i woke with a stomache ache, side, and back pains. The stomach aches are gone, its just the upper/middle left and right back now (from just below the shoulder blades down the middle of the abdomen). I havent had any dizziness or fever, just the persistent pain since 18 hours ago .

Follow up answer

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Since your stomach pain has subsided and there are no other associated symptoms, the pain is not of concern at this point.
It can take up to 3-4 days for the pain to completely subside.
Make sure that you include more liquid diet and avoid large meals until you feel comfortable.
Keep a close watch on the warning signs I had mentioned in above answer and visit ER if you notice any of them.
