What Does My Urine Analysis Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Sep 2015
Question: My urine analysis test came back showing "small" presence of billirubin, (UUBG was 1.0 EU/dL) My liver function blood tests came back with normal billirubin counts (.7 mg/dL total, .2 direct ) My ALT ensyme is 38 U/L and my AST is 21U/L.

Why does billirubin appear in urine if blood levels are normal? Worried.

Brief Answer:
Its normal value and process. Nothing to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist (DM).
Urobilinogen is a colourless by-product of bilirubin metabolism or degradation. It is formed in the intestines by action of bacteria present in the intestines. About half of the urobilinogen formed is reabsorbed and taken up via the portal vein to the liver, enters circulation and is excreted by the kidney in urine. Urobilinogen is normally 0.1 to 1.0 Ehrlich units per deciliter of urine. So your value is within normal range especially in the presence of other normal liver tests. So there is nothing to worry at all.
I hope I have answered your query and this will help you. If you have any further query I will be happy to answer that too. Remain in touch and get-well soon.

So when the lab results said Bilirubin: small, they were referring to the Urobilinogen? (that was listed separately and its number was, 1.0, which the result sheet did not flag. It flagged with an A (for Abnormal?) billirubin and wrote "small" after it.
