Posted on Mon, 13 Apr 2015
Question: Trigeminal nerve tightness sensation right side. Will it resolve? Happened after night of heavy alcohol stress and tiredness. 6 months been like this
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (17 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Spontaneous recovery is less likely

Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms and the lack of complete recovery even after six months.

Your symptoms are suggestive of facial nerve weakness with partial recovery. Tightness sensation commonly occur during the phase of recovery.

Most people recover within one month of weakness. About 20% people recover in longer periods of 6 months to 2 years. However, about 5% people may not recover completely.

In your case, complete improvement may not occur.

However, cosmetic or plastic surgery is a good option.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD (Internal Medicine), DM (Neurology) XXXXXXX Consultant Neurologist

Do u know what the cause may be? Also does trigeminal neuropsthy cause swelling?

Basically after night of alcohol I woke up with the tightness sensation
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Possibly related to alcohol and pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

The cause of neuropathy is related to alcohol intake as well as pressure over the nerve while sleeping.

Swelling sensation is common after trigeminal and facial neuropathy.

So whats the best way to get rid of the swelling? Also can this be due to a virus
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Herpes virus can cause this

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Herpes virus can cause neuropathy of facial nerve.

Swelling would subside as the nerve recovers. In the initial period, steroids are used. At this stage, there is no role of steroids.

Vitamin supplements would help.

Hair up is before and hair down is after

Can I use botox
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Botox would be useful.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I have seen your photographs and agree that you were prettier before and it is possible to reach that stage again with treatment.

Botox injections should be the first option.

Plastic surgery should be done only if botox fails.

So do I have a Bell's palsy? Or is this due to compression? Or what I don't understand no doctor will be clear with me and is it safe to have botox or surgery done if I have this problem cos I don't want anything to go wrong
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (4 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Cause can not be confirmed

Detailed Answer:
The cause- compression or Bells- can only be guessed and there is no way of confirming it.

Treatment does not depend on the cause now.

Botox or surgery will work in both Bells and compression.

doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (6 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Tightness is seen with partial recovery.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

Tightness sensation is commonly seen with partial recovery of nerves.

You should feel that cosmetic surgery would go right and not wrong.

Botox would be given after examining the face. Whichever side has stiffer muscles, would receive botox.

Yes, puffiness or swelling is seen with neuropathy.

can my bells palsy be so tiny because i can move my muscles perfectly. Also, can alcohol cause this like too much of it by itself.?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (8 hours later)
Brief Answer:
Yes.

Detailed Answer:
Yes, Bells palsy can be tiny, and affect very little muscle movements.

Alcohol has toxic effects on nerves, as well as people may sleep off in awkward position, where nerves can get mechanically compressed.

Best wishes,
