What Does Pelvic Ultrasound Showing Thickened Endometrium Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 May 2014
Question: I have just had a pelvic ultrasound (prolonged heavy menstrual bleeding with pain). Results show a 165cc uteris (12 months ago it was 96cc). No fybroids or other abnormality visible and the myometrium is homogenous. The endrometrium is a little thickened measuring 21mm. No visible sign of polyps. A 28mm follicle was noted in the left ovary which the ovaries otherwise being unremarkable. There is no hydronephrosis on either side. Waiting to get into a gynocologist but very concerned about uterine cancer. Help!

Brief Answer:
Not suggestive of cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The increase in the volume of uterus with no detectable fibroid or polyp is not a worrisome finding. This can happen due to muscle hypertrophy under the influence of internal hormones. This change is a normal physiological change and is not suggestive of cancer. Please do not worry. Rest of the ultrasound findings are normal.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thank you but how about the thickness of the endrometrium? The pelvic ultrasound I had 12 months prior showed a thickness of 12mm but now it is 21mm. I had just finished my menstral cycle the day prior to the ultrasound and it was fairly heavy and prolonged. I am experiencing quite strong pelvic pain.

Brief Answer:
Due to hyperplasia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The increased thickness of endoetrium is due to hyperplasia. This is the cause of your increased bleeding. A hormonal disturbance is likely. An endometrial biopsy will help in definitive diagnosis.
Hope my answer is helpful.
