Well, Rheumatoid Factor is just a marker or a supporting evidence to the symptoms your husband is experiencing and the examination findings by a doctor on examining the patient. Rheumatoid FActor can be false positive in a lot of conditions and may or may not indicate Arthritis.

So the main thing is: the patients history of joint pains, early morning stiffness, history of joint swellings. And while examining, your rheumatologist feels he has an objective swelling of the joints and pain on touching.

If Rf comes out positive, it is a supporting evidence indicating the diagnosis is right. It does not indicate severity, but it indicates the patient will need treatment for longer duration. Has his Anti CCP test been done?

Hope the information is useful
