What Does "severe Biatrial Enlargement" In ECHO Result Indicate?

default
Posted on Fri, 31 Oct 2014
Question: I'm a 42 year old male athlete (non-drinker, non-smoker, drug free) and went through a multitude of heart tests for upcoming race. Echo showed severe biatrial enlargement but my Cardiologist has no idea why, since I have low blood pressure and all other tests came back normal (ie. stress test, 24hr halter monitor, 24hr BP monitor). He said the enlargement is most likely hereditary. Does this sound plausible or could it be something else?

Brief Answer:
Difficult to say.but Few things can tried.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

With that information its difficult to say whether it is hereditary.

But few things that can be tried are check your mom and dad if they are around or aunts and uncles for similar medical history.

Other thing that can be tried is repeating 2d Echo and taking consultation in tertiary cardiac research institute.

Check your previous cardiac records - like done for employment, school/ college or done for some other screening.

Though it can be hereditary, its rare to present at this age without any past complains.

Hope this helps. Please ask if there are doubts.Regards.
