default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: I am a 22 year old female and started vomiting at 7:14 a.m. this morning. I have just finished up my 4th session of vomiting and the vomit color was about a light green and I think I ate some bad eggs yesterday. I do not have a fever or sweats my mouth is dry because my last session got rid of some water I was drinking. I just wanted to know if I should let nature take its course or seek medical attention?

Brief Answer:
hold off solids, fluid and electrolyte replacement, dramamine or peptobismol

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If you have associated severe abdominal pain or there is any evidence of bleeding then you should be seen to rule out serious causes for the vomiting.

Vomiting would be associated with irritation or inflammation of the stomach so pain in the upper part of the abdomen, just below the sternum, in the epigastrium, would be expected and okay (unless severe).

If there are no alarming symptoms then you can likely manage at home. Diarrhea may occur so you can monitor for this.
Treatment involves: (1) holding off all solid food till there is a 4 hour window of no vomiting

When this 4 hour window occurs, start with very small amounts of dry food, if this is tolerated then the amounts can be increased

(2)small amounts of fluids at a time initially. Because the stomach is unsettled, using large amounts may provoke vomiting.
Initially only 1 tsp to 1 tbs should be used every 5 mins for an hour. If this is all kept down then the amount is increased slightly.

If vomiting occurs in this hour, then have to start over

Use water or rehydration fluids to also give back electrolytes eg gatorade or poweraid

(3)peptobismol or dramamine would help with the vomiting, these are over the counter.
Pepto bismol may cause the stool to temporarily appear darker

(4)if diarrhea occurs then probiotics may also be helpful to restore the normal bacterial flora in the intestines and speed up healing

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions
