default
Posted on Mon, 19 Jan 2015
Question: I had an extreme sleep walking event where parts seemed as though I was dreaming. I was looking for something and began falling in my "sleep." Ended in the emergency room, not sure how I got there, taken to neurological intensive care unit. I had a broken rib, cracked collar bone, two shiners that one has an inch size mematoma ganging from my eyes, broken rib and tow epidural brain bleeds? What the hell happened?

Brief Answer:
Change of mental status

It would appear from your description of symptoms that you suffered a significant parasomnia event (sleepwalking) which included a significant loss of awareness for things going on around you. The other possibility is that you suffered from what we would call a SIGNIFICANT complex partial epileptic event.

Although not common to have its initiation in later adult life it can happen especially if triggered by stress factors such as extreme fatigue or lack of sleep, medications (especially sedative types), alcohol, and fevers which can provoke this behavior. Chances are that if you were in fact "sleepwalking" that you were doing more than that and the injuries would strongly suggest that you injured yourself in some way which is probably due to a fall down some stairs or in a room hitting yourself on a table or hard surface. Up to 15% of the general population does have at least one episode of sleepwalking.

Treatment is aimed at the most likely root cause which usually turns out to be extreme fatigue and tiredness. Patients can also have very precise and vivid recalls of events which do not appear to have been sufficiently studied.

You will likely have a battery of tests done in order to look at details in the brain that could explain not only this behavior but also your previous incidents of sleepwalking.

Once the cause is recognized or established then, proper treatment can begin.

It's going to be hard to know what the best thing is to do at this juncture until we can have results from the exams.
