What Does Slight Increase In Spleen Size Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Oct 2014
Question: spleen 14.5 cm, wBC 10.4, absolute monocytes 10.5, all other absolute wbc normal, RBC normal, platelets normal, iron normal but low end at 61. Liver tests normal but alt 73. Strep c, and mild tonsillitis right now. Doc and gastro doc not to concerned. Should I get tested for leukemia? Is it even a possibility with these numbers or am I jumping to conclusions because of a slight increase in spleen size? thank you!

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear.
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern. Your all reports are almost normal. Total wbc count is at upper range due to bacterial infection. No any abnormal cells mentioned. No chamce of leukemia in this case. Don't worry dear. Just be relaxed. Only slight increase in size of spleen is not the parameter. There are thousands of causes other than lrukemia for that. So don't worry at all for leukemia. Its not leukemia at all.

Thank you doctor, and you are correct, the increase in the spleen is really what has concerned me. My wbc count was 10.4 5 years ago as well......it has not moved. I did not know if this is normal. They said it is only slightly increased and could be normal for me. Just scared me when I was told on an ultra sound my spleen was enlarged. if I put my fingers under my rib and take a deep breath it pushes into my fingers. so I know it is there. A ct scan said the size is normal, but I disagree since I can feel it when I breath. I think the ultra sound might be right even though the ct with contrast and die said otherwise and is supposedly more accurate.Wanted to see if the blood work might indicate leukemia. Thank you doctor, and it is a relief to hear it could not be leukemia with the numbers presented! thank you.

Brief Answer:
Most welcome. Don't worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear.
you have wbc count remains around 10000. Normal level is 4000 to 11000. So it's just at high normal. And many persons have that count as normal. So no need to worry at all. Just relaxed. Hope I have answered your question, if you have any further questions then feel free to ask me.
I will be happy to answer.
