What Does Soreness On Throat Of Child Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: My 9 year old son has complained that his XXXXXXX apple has been sore to touch over the past few days. On Wednesady morning it looked more swollen and the skin is pink around it. I took him to my GP who looked in his ears, throat, checked glands in his neck, abdomen, pelvis and took is temperature which are all normal. It is not painful for my son to eat, talk or swallow. The doctor said that the skin moves freely over what he called a nodule on the XXXXXXX apple. He admitted he didn't know what it was and has referred him to the local hospital's paediatric assessment unit where he said they will probably do an ultrasound and possible blood tests to check for infection. I am obviously concerened what this nodule is and how it is likely to be treated.

Brief Answer:
I will get an USG done to localise the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thanks for the query

The symptoms you mentined (pain, swelling and redness) are suggestive of inflammation. The inflammation may be of structures present around XXXXXXX apple. These structures are thyroid gland, some lymph nodes or remnant of thyroglossal duct.
Acute thyroiditis(inflammation of thyroid) may have all these symptoms.USG will help in to find out the involved structure.
The further investigations and management will be based mainly on the USG finding.
In most of the cases whether it is inflammation of thyroid, lymph node or thyroglossal duct, treatment with antibiotic may be needed.
So, I would get an USG done as advised by your physicians also to find out the exact location of inflammation.
I shall be glad to answer if you have any more queries.
Regards
