What Does Spotting After Starting Birth Control Pill Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: Hello,

After being 2 weeks late on my period I've decided my period will be very late and have started birth control XXXXXXX I've been taking XXXXXXX for 7 months now and just last month I was off the pill. I'm now 4 days into the pack and I've been spotting alot, it used to be dark brown at first but now it's light pink. Is it normal for me to be spotting? or is it my period? I thought XXXXXXX prevents my period from coming until I'm off it. I would like to prevent my period or spotting as soon as possible, what am I supposed to do?

Brief Answer:
Continue the pill pack as usual.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
Well, you should not take XXXXXXX without having a period. XXXXXXX is to be taken on day 2 or 3 of your cycle.
It could be spotting since you started the pack midway, or could be an aberrant period. XXXXXXX prevents your period if taken continuously, but not when taken midcycle or pre menstrually.
You wish to prevent bleeding or spotting, then continue taking the pill without a pause now.
The spotting / bleeding will stop in a few days ( 3 - 5 days ).
I hope you took a pregnancy test before starting this current pack ?
All the best

I haven't been sexually active at all, will this affect me in any way?
I thought you can start XXXXXXX on any sunday or on the first day of my period, is that not correct?
Now should I stay on the pill or stop and get my period normally then start it again?

Brief Answer:
How many pills of the new pack have you taken so far?

Detailed Answer:
If you have not been sexually active, then this wont affect you at all. XXXXXXX is best started on the first day of your period, when taken close to your period, it messes up the bleeding pattern.
How many tablets have you taken so far ?

Last night I took my third tablet, and I've had more cramps than ever, also my spotting increased by a little but have stopped for a bit.

Brief Answer:
Continue the pack without a break.

Detailed Answer:
Just continue the pill pack as usual.
Dont stop it.
Stopping it abruptly will invite more spotting / bleeding.
If you find it personal do not answer, am asking for a professional standpoint - if you are not sexually active, then why are you on XXXXXXX ?

I have visited my doctor after months of irregular periods and he suggested I go on XXXXXXX to fix my pattern. He said I had Polycystic ovary syndrome and the only way I can fix it is by taking XXXXXXX I decided to get on the pill to make it better.

Thanks for you help, Im going to stay on the pill until my next period, hope it comes on time without another scare!

Brief Answer:
As below

Detailed Answer:
Well yes, you can then continue taking it.
Next time onwards, remember to start the pill on the second day of your period.
Finish this pack, then wait till you have a withdrawal bleed, and then start the new pack on day 2 of your period.
If you bleed while on the inactive pills, then continue the next pack as usual.
Take care.
