Question : I had surgery on my shoulder 3 weeks ago, since that time I have experienced gradual stomach pain. Today the pain in my upper left abdominal area is a dull and ongoing and when I breathe it causes more discomfort and pain. When I breathe slower and more purposeful, it lessons the pain. Can you think of anything that I may be concerned about?

Before we know about the causes, symptoms, and treatment for your left abdominal pain you see the anatomy of the various organs found on the left side of the abdomen. Spleen, large intestine, pancreas and a portion of the stomach are the major organs found in the upper left side of the abdomen. Lower ribs would cover these organs giving additional protection.
As in your case, i.e. a postoperative case, few possible options are-
Trapped gas-
An individual who eats/drinks fast would swallow air which builds up in the stomach causing cramps. After surgery, the movements of the body are restricted hence gas can't pass easily. Left side abdominal pain largely occurs due to this trapped gas.
Constipation-
Accumulation of feces in the large intestine occurs due to constipation. This condition can cause considerable pain in the abdomen.Thre is fecal stagnation acted upon by a number of colonic toxic bacteria producing gas.
Infection-
Any infection in the liver, kidney or intestine can affect the balance of digestive system causing severe pain in the abdomen. Usually termed as enteritis.
I'd suggest going for ultrasound scan of the abdomen.
Adv:
Take a PPI/antacid (eg. Omeprazole/Nexium 40 mg twice daily) for the time being and observe how you stay.
