default
Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: My mother LFT shows SGOT 45, SGPT 46 and ALB/GLB ratio 1.9
She is a diabetic but under control HBA1C 6.8, fasting 106, pp 154
Cholesterol is 236 (HDL 58, LDL 148)
TSH is 4.1 - taking thyronorm

What is the implication of LFT readings? Any suggestion...

Brief Answer:
Liver enzymes,TSH are normal but blood sugar levels need to be controlled

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.
This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.

The results of your mother's Liver function tests are fairly normal i.e;
1. SGOT ( normal range is 8-48 U/L) so 45 is normal
2. SGPT (normal range is 7 -55 U/L) so,46 is normal

3. Albumin /Globulin ratio range is 1.2- 1.5 so 1.9 is a little more, stating that
the amount of Globulin production is little less.

Hence , It would be more helpful to know the amount of Serum Albumin, Serum Globulin levels and Total Serum Protein levels.

Blood Glucose Control:
1. The Hb1Ac glycosylated hemoglobin shows the glycemic control in the past 3
months - less than 5.7% is normal so 6.8 shows that she should try and keep
a better control on her sugar levels . Strict diet control shall help along with
medications.
2. Fasting sugar - 106 mg/dl is a little more (normal is 70-100mg/dl)
3. PPBS - 154 mg /dl is a little more than normal (should be under 140mg/dl).

Thyroid Profile:
TSH 0.3- 5.0 U/ml is normal so, 4.1 U/ml shows normal Euthyroid state.

The above tests implicate that:
1. The liver enzymes and TSH levels are normal.
2. The blood sugar levels need to be controlled better.
3. A further analysis of Serum Albumin, globulin levels and total protein levels
will give a better picture of the reason behind raised A/G ratio.

Hope this answers your query. Don't worry .
Do write back if you have any further doubts.
