Question: Hello my son is 24 he had a cardiac arrest we did an MRI and this is what the impression part of the report says:
Moderately severe ventricular enlargement and diffuse cortical sulcal prominence consistent with advanced atrophic change, unusually prominent for patient age.
there are occasional focal areas of altered signal within the right frontoparietal, bilateral parietal and occipital regions likely related to areas of ischemia or infraction. these correspond to areas of low density noted on the CT study dated November 16,2015

Brief Answer:
Brain damages due to lack of blood supply and/or oxygen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for using HCM.

I have read your query and understand your concerns.

Those brain MRI findings are consistent with brain damages caused by lack of blood supply and/or oxygen due to cardiac arrest.

Venticular enlargement and atrophy of brain derive from brain mass loss due to ischemia.

Damage of brain areas caused by lack of blood supply/oxygen more than 5 minutes are irreversible.

Damages due to lack of blood supply/oxygen less than 5 minutes have better chances of recovery.

However, there is need to know the actual neurologic state of your son, when cardiac arrest happened and if he had any neurologic improvement during this time or not, in order to have a correct answer about the recovery possibilities and degree.

A favorable factor is your son's young age, because of the brain plasticity; other normal areas of brain cortex possibly start to take the functions of damaged areas.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

Brief Answer:
Follow up.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Enlarged ventricles may be a result of brain tissue loss, but if there is evidence of increased intracranial pressure (hydrocephalus), this condition should be treated.

It is necessary for me to examine the original MRI report or MRI images, in order to have a correct understanding if there is increased pressure or not.

So, if it is possible, upload the MRI report.

Awaiting....
