Question: I was recently seen by a dermatogolist and had mole removed from my upper back. The doctor did a a biopsy on it and the report came back as compound melancytic nevus with moderate atypia. The doctor recommended on the report that I get "A conservative removal with a narrow margin of normal skin. I need to know is this procedure necessary for me to do? Please advise me what I should do? I need a second opinion.

Brief Answer:
Melancytic nevus excision

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your medical question.

I am sorry to hear that you recently had a mole removed and it showed some atypia. This atypia means that the cells in the mole was irregular but not cancer. But this atypia could change into a cancerous growth. Your doctor has recommended that you have an complete excision and I totally agree with him/her. Melanoma can be a very aggressive cancer and to be sure that everything was removed this excision is warranted.

The good news here is that you got this mole looked at and biopsied early.

I strongly recommend that you proceed with the excision.
