What Does The Following CT Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Fri, 18 Sep 2015
Question: Had a XXXXXXX CT scan done for urinary tract issues which turned out to be kidney stones. My concern is a 1cm liver lesion was also noted. uro would just say it's probably nothing, but will send to your primary. Who is a gyno. they just called and said I needed to see my real primary, gyno had just been the one to do the uro referral. girl on the phone said it requires follow-up, GI specialist likely.

I'm a little freaked out. no other symptoms to note other than fatigue and dizziness but that seems centered around my menstrual cycle. I'm 46.

Wouldn't a scan that picked up a lesion in the liver also pick up masses elsewhere? if so, where? ie pancreas, colon etc. it was the only other note. besides the stones, the 1cm liver lesion.

Nothing pointed out from a variety of blood tests including a complete metabolic panel. numerous regular blood cell counts. hyperthyroid and regular thyroid. oh, potassium a little high at 5.3.. calcium 10.1.. sodium 139..

likelihood of lesion being cancer??

Brief Answer:
it could be benign or malignant, please upload the report

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

it would help me to see the actual report. The lesion is very small. Such lesions can be found in solid organs. Hollow organs (the intestine and stomach) cannot be accurately visualized. Only indirect signs of tumors can be found sometimes like thickening of their walls for example.

I'll be glad to comment on your report when you upload it.

Kind Regards!

unfortunately I don't have a copy...do I get it from the urologist? the gynecologist? .the lab that did it? I'm.assuming masses in the colon would have been observed if present?

Brief Answer:
it's your test, the lab should give you the report...

Detailed Answer:
Unless you've done another agreement, the lab should give you the report. You (or your insurance) have paid for it and it belongs to you! Sometimes the labs may inform the doctors, so perhaps the doctors have the report too.

CT scan is not the best way to visualize intestinal masses. As I've mentioned in my previous answer hollow organs cannot be accurately visualized. There could only be indirect signs. Most likely no mass would be visualized even if it exists. Colonoscopy is the right test for a reliable exclusion of colon cancer. CT colonoscopy is an alternative, albeit not an equally accurate one.

CT is a great test for masses on solid organs which include the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys. Lymph nodes in the abdomen can also be visualized which may provide additional information about malignancies.
Very small masses can be missed though.

Kind Regards!
