My daughter's (6 yr old) blood has been tested today. The LFT results show SGPT 109, SGOT-42. Blood routine shows WBC as 12200 and Lymphocytes 60.
She has been sensitive to food that are difficult to digest such as tapioca since childhood, with immediate abnormality in stool and designs on her tongue. General appetite is poor.
She was hospitalised for a bout of Gastroenteritis from 27-30 December.
Given her brief medical history and nature of blood test results, would you recommend a detailed investigation to rule out inherent liver related issues?
Kindly guide us.
Thank you, XXXXXXX
Likely to be due to a viral infection.

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I have checked the attached reports. Although the WBC is on the higher side, the neutrophil count is not raised and so I would consider it to be a simple viral infection. The LFT report corroborates and the elevation in SGOT and SGPT could be attributed to the same. The poor appetite and other related issues are likely to be associated as well. I do not find a cause for concern and you would need to be patient. The prior episode of gastroenteritis is seemingly unrelated.
I would still insist you to mention the complaints and relevant details. That will help me to guide you properly.
I would await your response.

Based on the premise that this could be a viral infection, may I raise another concern that we've been having since long.
When she was about 8-10months old, she had a continuous bout of diarrhoea for 10-12 days. We did not take it seriously since these were assumed to be common in infants. Finally a paediatrician was consulted and brought under control.
Is there a possibility of this bout leaving untreated virus dormant in her body that is resurfacing time and again, causing poor appetite and digestion problems?
For now she has an excellent appetite after having the bcomplex tablets daily. Stool has a slight unclear appearance, occasional stomach pain reported.
We had consulted a gastroenterologist yesterday, who prescribed udiliv tablets.
Kindly advise,
Many thanks. XXXXXXX
A fibre rich diet will ensure a good bowel movement.

Thanks for writing back.
Let me assure you that these viruses are all around all of us. It is only when our immunity somehow dips that we get affected. So, what is already abundant outside needs not lie stealthily dormant only to resurface after so long. The previous episode of diarrhea had resolved and this has nothing to do with that.
Incidentally B-Complex is just acting as a placebo (peace of mind). The infection subsides in 5-10 days irrespective of treatment and therefore it is normal for the appetite to return. It is just that you attribute it to the B-complex tablets. I wish you attributed it to the magical healing touch that I could remotely have bestowed upon her remotely. But in reality it is just the normal progression of things.
You can continue to give Udiliv meaninglessly. Its your choice. Unless there is biliary stasis Udiliv will not help and there is not the slightest reason to suspect her ailment to be due to biliary stasis or cholestasis.

Very heartening to know that her good appetite is not related to the supplements.
We are still trying to understand why her SGPT is 109, same as during her infection about 2 weeks back. SGOT has subsided to within normal range.
Will SGPT return to normal on its own without any medication or efforts?
Kindly advise.
No medication needed.

I am glad that you are happy with my response.
You need not worry. Like SGOT the SGPT too will return to normal and that too without any medication or any additional effort.
