Posted on Mon, 20 Apr 2015
Question: my xray showed minimal infiltrates in my lower right lung. I had a pet scan and a ct done about 6 months ago, because something else had shown up, everything was ok. This last xray that was taken 3 weeks ago, showed XXXXXXX infiltrates. I wasn't feeling good, so I had gone to my doctor, and that's when it had shown up. I have had a lot of sinus drainage and have been on antibiotics, plus a cough. The antibiotics clear it up, then it come back. Do u think the infiltrates are something more serious. Thanks,XXXX

Brief Answer:
Please get repeat chest X ray to confirm treatment of lung infiltrates

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX
Thanks for writing in to us.

I have read through your query in detail.
Please find my observations below.

1. As you have got a PET scan and CT done earlier, at that time your doctors might have thought of a cancer process. Since the PET scan and CT scan did not show any serious abnormality, therefore the possibility of a cancer is almost ruled out.

2. Infiltrates in the lung mean that there is some sort of prominence of airways and most commonly this occurs due to infections. I would certainly like to see your latest X ray, if you can attach a picture to your query and then we can discuss if these infiltrates need further attention.

3. Keflex and amoxicillin are antibiotics and if your cough and congestion is improving then you might have a secondary bacterial infection. Taking antibiotics regularly is not advised.

4. It will help to know if you come across pollution at work or in your neighborhood that can be causing a sort of allergic bronchitis in you. If there is exposure to pollen and dust then you have to protect yourself from it.

5. Considering that you might have symptoms due to chronic bronchitis and at time manifestation of secondary bacterial infection, it is suggested that you consult a pulmonologist and protect yourself form potentially serious lung infections in the future. Learning breathing exercises and coping with your cough might help improve your ability to handle your condition.

6. I will suggest you take another X ray chest after completing the antibiotics so that it will be clear if the infiltrates were indeed due to secondary bacterial infection and was subsequently treated by antibiotic medication.

Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.

Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.

Dr.Vivek
