default
Posted on Fri, 31 Mar 2017
Question: Hi,

I am 27 weeks pregnant. This is my first pregnancy. I had my Anomaly scan done in Week 20th and the reports were normal. Is it important to get these tests done if anomaly reports are fine:

1. TIFFA
2. 4D
3. Foetal echo.

also, i recently got my blood tests done during week 26 and here were few alarming points:

1. My sugar level was 136 after taking 75g glucose 2 hours before. At the start of my pregancy*Week 7) it was around 96. Is it something to worry about. What precautioary measures should I take.
2. My PCV value was 37 at the start of pregnancy. It came down to 34 in the recent report. Is there something alarming here.
3. My haemoglobin level also came down from 13 to 11.3 in the recent report.

Please help.

Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need to take the ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mrs. XXXXXXX thanks for trusting us. No dear, if anomaly scan was fine there is no need to do all these scans in my opinion.
Your sugar level is fine if it was after 1 hour of glucose intake but high in case it was after 2 hours.
PCV and hemoglobin falls after pregnancy and falls further after 2nd trimester as there is hemodilution to tide over the blood loss during delivery.
There is nothing to worry till it stays 10 or above but ideally should be more than 11 grams
All the best

Thank you Doctor. This helps. :)

About blood sugar, i had taken glucose about 2 hours before giving the sample. Is i something to worry about. What precautionary mesaures can I take.

Also, i had few more questions:

1. My pre-pregnancy weight was about 62 Kgs(Height 5'2"). I am 27 weeks pregnant now weighing about 72 Kgs. My doctor has raised big concerns about my weight gain - she asked me to eat less, not eat dry fruits, have skimmed milk, eat fruits only once in a week. I am a vegetarian and fruits is something i rely upon for vitamins and minerals. What is your opinion about my weight gain and is it really alarming.

2. I want to have a normal delivery. I practize pre-natal yoga 3-4 times a week and try to take walks for about 20-30 min everyday. Also I am working and go to office regulary. What other measures can I take to strengthen chances for normal delivery.

3. What scans/tests will be needed for the next three months of my pregnancy until delivery. How often should I visit the doctor.

Thanks and regards, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
All necessary course of events explained

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX your gynaecologist is right as your weight gain is definitely more than usual plus high glucose test.
You should eat one fruit a day but avoid grapes, chiko, banana and XXXXXXX
Dry fruits not needed except almonds and walnuts and that too not more than 5 a day.
Yes you should walk for 45-60 minutes a day especially after meals which will reduce weight and help in hastening chances of normal delivery too.
Continue Yoga and skimmed milk.
Take sprouts, pulses, paneer and soybeans as high protein source.
You need to visit your gynaecologist after 2weeks and then as and when required
You will need to do fasting and post meal values now every week and a hemoglobin assessment apart from ultrasound.
