What Does The Following Blood Test Result Indicate?

Posted on Wed, 8 Mar 2017
Question: Hello, I just completed some blood work and have two questions about my results.

Are these two items something to be alarmed about?

Monocytes Absolute high at 1.2
WBC High at 11.6

They don't se to be too high, should I be concerned? The other CBC #'s were in normal range, towards the high end some on the cusp but still within normal ranges.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I would not be concerned about the monocytes given that the upper range is 1x109 (the 9 is exponent).

The total white blood cell count is a little high. That figure is made up of all of the white cells including neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes. So if they are on the higher end, that would explain the slightly elevated total WBC count.

If you've had a recent infection, that might explain it.

Was there a specific reason you had a CBC done?

I usually get a CBC done as part of a regular panel my doctor has me do. About three years ago my CBC's were all raised and he thought I had cancer but it turned out I did not and my cells were perfectly fine as we did a follow check of my cells under a microscope in a lab. I take a lot of medication like Zyprexa, Seroquel, Lamictal and lipitor and Atenelol so I don't know if this could affect the WBC slightly but I have had a stuffed nose for a while now but doesn't feel like any big deal. Is the WBC fairly high? Should I be doing a follow up test?

Detailed Answer:
No your white blood count is not that elevated. And your medications may affect it.

I think it would be reasonable to get a repeat CBC (with peripheral smear) in a couple of months (6-8 weeks). A peripheral smear is where the blood is actually looked at when counting rather than run through an automated counter. If it is going higher or any abnormalities are noted, a repeat of what your doctor did 3 years ago (a pathologist to look at your blood) would be the next step.
