What Does The Following Knee MRI Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Oct 2016
Question: Hi,
Recently I got slipped from bike and my right knee was hurt.Though it is causing less pain during normal walk,it is hurting a lot while walking on stairs. I visited orthopedic surgeon and he told me to undergo MRI. The MRI report is as follows:
IMPRESSION : Grade3 tear involving the posterior horn & body of lateral meniscus, extending into the inferior & outer surfaces & associated with parameniscal cyst measuring 11x5.3mm
1) what does it actually mean??
2) My surgeon informed that i require arthoscopic partial meniscectomy for treating this issue..Is it compulsory ? and if i had to undergo surgery how many days will it take for me to get back to normal like going to office,walking..??
3) Are there any complications associated with surgery in future??
4) Do i need surgery immediately or can i extend this to somewhere around 1month??
5) In case of surgery, will the cyst be removed along with the tear??My surgeon informed that the cysts are very common for everyone and they have least impact on pain and there is no necessity of removing the cyst...
Please help me out...
Regards

Brief Answer:
Surgery is the best choice.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

1. You have a major tear of lateral meniscus that is causing the knee pain and is making the knee unstable. The small cyst near meniscus is suggestive of degenerative changes.

2. Partial meniscectomy will remove the hanging meniscus and will help you function normally without much discomfort. You can return to normal activities in 2 weeks.

3. Due to the injury itself you may develop arthritis later after a few years.

4. If you delay the surgery it can cause more discomfort, difficult to perform the surgery and delay in recovery.

5. The cyst can be removed if it is just near the tear. Otherwise there is no need to sacrifice an extra piece of meniscus just because of the cyst.

I hope this answers your query.
