What Does The Following Mammogram Report Suggest?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: A woman I know had a mammogram, and the radiologist must have seen something, because now she must have another mammogram with "spot compressions". She must also have something called "ML Views".
Would you please tell me the definitions of these terms I've put in quotation marks? She is scared to look up the information herself and wants me to tell her. I want the best definitions I can give her. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
This views are to get better images of the breast.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

1. Spot compression. In normal conditions, during the mammography, whole breast is compressed. In case of spot compression, only selected part of the breast (one spot) is compressed. This allows to localize the whole unit (mammogram) pressure to one spot. As a result, we get better compressed tissues. Better compressed tissues we get, better quality of the images we achieve.

2. ML views - medio-lateral views. In normal condition the breast in the mammogram is compressed from the top to the bottom. In case of ML views, the unit is rotated 90 degree so the breast is compressed from the middle (center of the chest) to the side (outside). This allows to see better the lateral side of the breast (outside of it) as this part is closest to the film.

Please also note that almost 80% of mammography recalled women have benign results. So her chances (statistically) that something serious will be found is only 20%.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
