Question : My husband is having pain in his lower back left side. He has had a CT scan and kidney shows a stone, but not in a position to hurt or be painful. All other tests are normal. Pain is almost unbearable. Uncomfortable to sit or lay down. Standing feels OK. Hurts to bend over. Liver is a little fatty cause of being overweight.

Brief Answer:
Recommended MRI lumbar spine for low back ache

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

The CT scan is a good investigation to know about stones in the urinary system and is a basic imaging modality. Since the stone is unlikely to cause such a pain, it will help to discuss with your doctor if there is any nerve pinching or disc problems in lower back.

In cases of low back ache however a detailed evaluation of the spine and any suspected nerve pinching is essential if CT scan does not provide sufficient information on the cause of pain.

I highy recommend a discussion with your doctor and performing a MRI scan of lumbar spine as required after clinical evaluation. Please let your doctor know if your husband has any metallic implants when planning MRI scan for safety reasons.

Hope your query is answered.
Please do write back if you have any doubts.
