What Does This MRI Report Of Brain Indicate?

Question: Hi
My mom suffered a stroke yesterday and we didnt do thrombolysis becuase her pressure was higher (both diastolic & systolic). Though she recovered on her own after a few hours in the hospital, she is now not completely recovered. She is semi concious, not able to speak much & doesnt have solid food. Yesterday her condition was better and she had eaten solid food, spoke (though not completely comprehensible) & able to move her arms & limbs. The MRI report says "Acute Infarct in left mid perventricular white matter, corona raidate & external capsule". She is currently under Ecospirin, Lobet, Clopilat medications. We are still in hospital, but wanted to know if this condition is expected?

Brief Answer:
She would gradually get better.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted the details of your mother. She has suffered stroke on the left side of brain, which controls speech and movements of right arm and leg.

We expect these functions to be affected for some time, and she would gradually recover over a few weeks.

In my opinion, she would have done better if she was thrombolysed. However, as she was getting better, it was not done.

You should continue the current medications, along with physiotherapy and speech therapy.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,

Thanks Doctor for your valuable inputs. Today she seems to have improved a bit, but her arms are still weak and not able to move much. She was able to communicate (speech still not clear), but able to understand perfectly fine. Food intake is through a feeding tube. BP is still around 170-180/65-80 and is measured through artery. But I am being told that the NIBP readings are normal. Lobet was stopped today. Is this a sign of recovery?

Brief Answer:
Yes, she is recovering.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

The description seems to suggest that she is recovering. However, a good degree of improvement may not be seen on day-to-day comparisons. Recovery is generally slower, and a good amount of improvement may take a few weeks at least.

Best wishes,
